Chapter Eight

Belinda arrived just as they left, wearing a baggy pair of overall shorts and a tube top that revealed a little butterfly tattoo on her shoulder. Julie had just about fainted when she’d first spotted it a few weeks ago.

Belinda threw her purse behind the bar. “Was that Tony?”

Julie sighed. “Uh-huh. And his daughter. He’s got a daughter.”

Belinda’s jaw dropped. “Wow. He doesn’t seem, you know, dadlike.”

“You wouldn’t say that if you saw the two of them together.”

“Really. What were they doing here? I thought you guys had decided it wasn’t going to work out.”

“We did. He’s just being a good neighbor.” And Julie related that morning’s events while she set up a painting area for Belinda.

“Now, excuse me, but a guy doesn’t spend half a day painting your restaurant—a restaurant he claims he doesn’t want you to open—unless he wants something from you. Like sex.”

“I dunno, Bel. It didn’t seem that way.”

“You sound sad.”

“I am a little. I shouldn’t even be thinking about a new guy right now. But I can’t help it. He was cute and sexy before and he really got under my skin. I saw a new side of him today.”

“’Cause he has a kid?” Belinda wrinkled her nose. “Doesn’t appeal to me at all.”

“I didn’t think it would me, either.” She shrugged again. “Can’t explain it. But, I can’t help but wonder if I’ve made a terrible mistake.”

A FEW DAYS LATER TONY dropped by again, this time without Jasmine. “Hey, the paint looks great.”

“Thanks.” It had taken Julie the rest of that first day and all of a second to get it done, but she was pleased with the results. The texturing she’d done had given the walls a sort of antique look. Today she planned to tackle the bar. It was a beautiful thing, solid oak and intricately carved with lions’ heads and leaves, but it was scarred and in desperate need of refinishing.

“I’m heading for The Home Depot to get some stuff for the yard,” Tony said. “Since you probably go there every day, I thought I’d ask if you needed anything.”

Well, how thoughtful. “I really can’t think of anything just now. I’m in debt to that store up to my eyeballs anyway. Oh, but there is one little thing you could help with. The bar has a few built-in drawers, and one of them is completely stuck. Maybe you could put a little muscle behind it and yank it out?”

“Sure. Show me.”

Was she inventing excuses to keep him around? Yeah, maybe. The drawer really was stuck, but with a hammer she’d probably have been able to get it open on her own. He looked so good in his khaki shorts and soft-blue pocket tee that she had to stick her hands in her pockets to keep them from straying.

She led him behind the bar and pointed to the stubborn drawer.

Tony rubbed his hands together. “Let’s see if all the pumping iron pays off.” He bent down, grabbed the drawer handle and gave it a mighty yank.
